Parents Association Constitution
Gonzaga College SJ
21st November 2013
I am pleased to write to you as Chairman of the Gonzaga College Parents Council for 2013/2014, and to extend a belated welcome to new parents who may not be familiar with the Council and its objectives.
The Council is made up of 2 representatives for each year from 1st year to 6th year,
plus the two parent representatives on the Board of Management of the School. Our
names and contact details are attached and available on the Gonzaga College website.
As you may know, elections to the Council happen every year at the AGM of the Parents
Association in September.
The objectives of the Parents Association, and therefore the objectives of the Council, are outlined in the Constitution of the Parents Association and are published on the parents council section of the website. Our primary role is to provide an opportunity for discussion and consultation about matters of common interest to parents, teachers and pupils of Gonzaga and to bring forward to the Board of Management items of interest particularly from parents’ perspective.
Our preferred means of communication to you is by email and our intention is to communicate by email in the coming year. Similarly if you feel there is an item of interest we invite you to submit an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or you may wish to bring the item to any member of the Parents Council particularly your own year representative. For parents who have not supplied email addresses to the school the information will be available on the Parents Association section of the website and the following link is to that page http://gonzaga.ie/parent_council.html. You may wish to save this link to your favourites file in your web browser. If you forward your email to the school or indeed to the above email address we will ensure it is included on the list.
At our AGM the previous Chairman, Oliver Brennan, outlined the improvements that had been achieved regarding the Gonzaga web site and the ongoing work that will foster greater communications between parents and the activities of the school. Oliver also reviewed the various talks arranged by the Parents Council and the (slightly used) Jumper and polo shirt sale at the end of the school year which proved to be a great success and will be repeated this year. Indeed a considerable sum was raised by this and donated to charity. Many thanks to Oliver, for all his hard work, last year.
After the success of the series of talks the Parents Council are planning further talks in the spring and will have more details on the subject and speakers as the time nears. The basic theme will be on Careers in the Future and skill sets for flexibility in future careers. It will be an attempt to look into the future of the world our boys will take part in and shape. If there is any parent with any suggestions for speakers or topics around this theme, or would like to know more please contact the Council through your year representative or through email at email@example.com We seek your input into this venture and would be delighted to hear from you through either of the communication channels mentioned above.
Concern has been expressed at the very large and possibly unsafe numbers attending
midnight mass each year. Discussions at Board of Management are ongoing on how to
facilitate as many people as possible and several options are being considered. As
with every year a number of invitations by ticket are issued and we have been advised
that there will be a very strict application of entry by ticket only in coming years.
The Parents Forum for each year, while primarily, but not exclusively, a social forum for parents of the relevant year, has been another growing and is a successful channel of communication. We look forward to working with the various Fora in the coming year as appropriate. The Parents Council members look forward working with the Fora in the coming year on any relevant issues that arise in the Parent Forum.
Please feel free to contact me or your representative on the Council if there are any issues that you would like us to consider.
