Tennis

Overview

Gonzaga has a proud tradition in schools’ tennis.

We have won the Leinster schools’ Cups on many occasions at each age level.

The school has five tennis courts. Our tennis facilities are amongst the best in Irish schools’ tennis.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Fr. Keane SJ built up tennis in the college from scratch to establish the school as one of the most respected tennis schools in the country. For many years now eight teams of seven players each have represented the college annually in Leinster competitions. Many other boys just play tennis for enjoyment. An annual highlight is the Past v Present tennis match in May. Enquiries about tennis at Gonzaga, may be directed to Mr Keenahan

Gonzaga Senior 1st and 2nd Teams who contested the finals of the Leinster Senior Cups (Div 1 & 2)

The Senior 1st Team beat Belvedere in a thrilling final.

Osgar O’hOisin won the top singles and Belvedere levelled the match by winning the second singles.

Michael Donnelly played a marathon 3rd singles which Belvedere won in a tie-break in the third set.

Gonzaga needed both doubles to win.
Jack O’Connor & Mark Dowling       and      Rory Hughes & David Meenaghan      both won.

Scores of    6 -4 , 7 - 6     and    6 -4 , 4 - 6 , 6 - 4  respectively give some idea of the contest.

Photograph shows the cup in the hands of the tennis captain, Charlie O’Kelly.

The Senior Division 2 Final was also an extremely close contest.

St. Colomba’s beat Gonzaga Senior2    by    3 - 2.

Although Gonzaga lost the top two singles, Cormac Dempsey’s victory in the third singles paved the way for a dramatic doubles contest. Gonzaga needed both doubles to win. Both went to three sets. One was won by 7 - 6 in the third set but alas the other was lost by 7 - 5.

Tennis has been arranged for boys in 1st , 2nd and 3rd Years from now until midterm:   Schedule
