Gonzaga has a proud tradition in schools’ tennis.

We have won the Leinster schools’ Cups on many occasions at each age level.

The school has five tennis courts. Our tennis facilities are amongst the best in Irish schools’ tennis.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Fr. Keane SJ built up tennis in the college from scratch to establish the school as one of the most respected tennis schools in the country. For many years now eight teams of seven players each have represented the college annually in Leinster competitions. Many other boys just play tennis for enjoyment. An annual highlight is the Past v Present tennis match in May. Enquiries about tennis at Gonzaga, may be directed to Mr Keenahan

Gonzaga qualified for the final with victories over Belvedere, Blackrock and St.Michaels.

Belvedere then qualified for the final by beating the winners of Section B in the semi-final.

The re-match was anticipated to be close and very competitive and it was both. The Gonzaga team included five 6th Year students playing their last match for the College and two Transition Year students who returned early from their TY adventure week to play with their team.

The top singles saw good friends and long-time rivals Osgar O’hOisin and Owen Kirk play some top class tennis in an absorbing contest that had the audience enthralled for two hours. A single service break in each set was all that separated them at the finish. Osgar’s victory set a marker that brought encouragement to his team. Michael Donnelly on the next court played the match of his life to win in three sets against the same opponent who had beaten him three weeks ago. On the court beside that, Fergus O’Rourke played the longest match of the day which Daniel O’Neill playing in his last match for Belvedere won in two tie-break sets.

Belvedere’s first doubles proved too strong for Rory Hughes and Sam O’Kelly, so with the match poised at 2-all, the second doubles became the decider. Mark Dowling and Stephen Barr, overcame a slow start and gained in confidence the longer the match went on. Ultimately, their straight sets victory secured the cup for Gonzaga.
