Success in Ultimate frisbee competition in Kilkenny
Tuesday March 27th saw the biggest ever Irish schools Ultimate frisbee competition
took place in Kilkenny. 16 teams from 11 schools across the country took part in
the All-Ireland Schools Indoor Championships and Gonzaga went home with 1st place
in the A Division, the coveted Spirit Award (a trophy given to the team that plays
with the most respect, sportsmanship and honesty) and 1st place in the B Division.
The A Division final was won by the Senior 1st, a team made up of 6th, 5th and 4th
years who fought back from 2 points down to win 10-9 against
a Cork school team full of Irish Junior international players.
The same team won the Spirit Award - a prize voted on by other teams and awarded
to the team that upholds the rules fairly, plays honestly and treats opposition with
respect. This is particularly important given there is no referee. The B Division
title went to the Junior 1sts, a team of 1st and 2nd years and one of only 2 Junior
teams at the tournament (Gonzaga fielded both). They were the tournaments surprise
package and shocked many Senior teams with their pace and skill. All in all, the
5 teams from Gonzaga played excellently, proving that the future of Ultimate in the
school os looking brighter than ever before.
