All-Ireland Linguistics Olympiad: sign up now!

The Linguistics Olympiad allows you test your mind on puzzles in logic, language and linguistics. It’s a problem solving challenge. You will be afforded the opportunity of developing strategies to solve complex problems in unfamiliar languages from around the world. No prior knowledge of either linguistics or foreign languages is required. The competition is open to all Gonzaga College students. Parents Council AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Parents Council will take place on Tuesday 27th September 2016 at 7pm in the Coulson Theatre, Gonzaga College. There will be refreshments afterwards in the Dining Hall. All welcome. There are vacancies on the council for two representatives from each of 1st, 3rd and 5th Year. Election of the representatives will take place at the meeting.

Gonzaga chess team are 2016 Eton College Champions

Very well done to the Gonzaga A chess team who have won the 2016 Eton College Rapidplay Tournament. 50 schools took part with six players per team over five rounds. This was the first time that an international team was invited to participate.

Gonzaga wins All Ireland Inter-Schools Sailing Championship

Congratulations to Tom Higgins (S3A) and Loghlen Rickard (S5D) on their sailing success. Two Gonzaga teams competed this weekend in the Championship in Sutton Dinghy Club. Five sailors (Loghlen Rickard and Tom Higgins Team A and Patrick Coyle, Henry Start and Jeff McGovern Team B) represented the school in the mixed fleet event. This fleet is comprised of Lasers, Mirrors, 420s, Fevas and Toppers sailing a single course using the Portsmouth Yardstick handicapping system for scoring. After three races in light and shifty winds, Team A of Loghlen Rickard and Tom Higgins were victorious, winning the All Ireland Inter-Schools Sailing Championship (The Conor Nolan Memorial Trophy) for Gonzaga Coll

Trip to Greece

During the first week of school, Leaving Cert Ancient Greek students embarked on a 10-day study tour with third level students of classics and archeology as part of the IIHSA's (Irish Institute for Hellenic Studies in Athens) annual educational tour. We explored the most important archeological sites and museums on mainland Greece, spanning from the neolithic period up through the byzantine era. Highlights included: the Athenian Acropolis, the Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi, the Byzantine monastery of Osios Loukas, the Ancient Theatre of Epidauros, and the Sanctuary of Zeus in Olympia- the site of the Ancient Olympic Games. Conor O’Donnell (S6C) is currently in Baku, Azerbaijan representing Ireland in the 42nd World Chess Olympiad – the highest team tournament in chess. No fewer than 16 of the top 20 players in the world are playing, including world-champion, Magnus Carlsen (Norway). Conor is the 4th ranked player on the Irish team, which consists of only 5 players. The Irish team is led by Grandmaster Alexander Baburin. Ireland were seeded 69th out of 150 countries. After 9 rounds they are currently in 33rd-53rd place (50th on the various tie-breaks). Conor has played against Bolivia, Vietnam, Madagascar, Wales, Namibia and Iraq. He stands on 3.5/6, having won his last two games. To represent Ireland at the Ol

Five Sixth Year students have left for Lourdes to volunteer on the six-day Dublin Diocesan Pilgrimage. We wish them and all of the pilgrims a safe, enjoyable and fulfilling trip.

Gonzaga Welcomes Boston College President

We were delighted to welcome President of Boston College, Fr William Leahy SJ, along with Mr Paul Coulson, to our school on Monday 5th September. Fr Leahy addressed all Fifth and Sixth Year students about life at Boston college, the role of Jesuit teachings in our lives, and the Coulson Scholarship.
