The Archive and Classics
Current screening of Christopher Nolan’s version of Homer’s Odyssey turns thoughts to the Archive’s reflection of Gonzaga’s placing of the Classics as central to its teaching; to memories of the school’s earliest teachers, and to the many alumni who distinguished themselves in the study, and teaching, of Latin and Greek.
The photos of john Wilson and Fr Edmond Keane SJ above are screenshot-stills from an excellent film of Gonzaga in 1972 made by John David Biggs (’72) and featuring Sixth Year and many of the staff of the time.
The immense appreciation of the work of these men is reflected in the dedication on the flyleaf of the large donation of classical books given to the library by the late Richard J. Clarke (’71):
