10.10.2022: Golf News

- Well done to the following TY students who took part in the Past Pupils Golf event in Elm Park on Friday 30 September, and thank you to Ben Carroll for taking photos of the event. See more photos here.

Patrick Masterson; Dan O’Mahony; Olly Riley; Oliver Martin; James O’Dwyer; Bill Shelley.

- The Junior golf team of Marcus O’Grady (3A), Robert Sweetman (1B), and Jack Conlon (2C) represented the College in the recent Leinster Schools qualifying competition in Delgany GC, Co. Wicklow. The boys performed admirably on a tricky and hilly course which was quite sodden in places due to the recent rainfall. However, they represented the College well. Unfortunately, the team score (best two of three, stableford scores) wasn’t enough to qualify to the Leinster finals.

I would like to thank the three players for their huge effort on the day.

- The Senior golf team of Samuel Inglis (6A), Stephen McMahon (6C), Aaron Hillery-Nolan (4C), Charlie Quinn (5D), and

Michael Foley (6C) represented the College in the recent Leinster Schools qualifying competition in Woodbrook GC, Bray, Co. Wicklow. Playing in breezy and often gusty conditions, the boys performed as well as could be expected. Unfortunately, the team score (best four of five, gross scores) wasn’t enough to qualify to the Leinster finals. We were 9 shots from qualifying.

I would like to thank the five players, plus parents who assisted with giving lifts to and from Woodbrook GC. A special thanks to Miriam Hillery, Mark Nolan and Jim Quinn for their assistance on the day.

The Senior Golf team - Andrew Fraser, Sam Inglis, Stephen McMahon, Aaron Hillery-Nolan, and Michael Foley -

represented the College in the recent Leinster Schools qualifying competition in Woodenbridge GC, Co. Wicklow. Playing in often torrential rain and thereafter, very wet fairways and greens, the boys performed as well as could be expected. Unfortunately, the team score (best four of five, gross scores) wasn’t enough to qualify to the Leinster finals. I would like to thank the five players, plus parents who assisted with giving lifts to and from Woodenbridge GC. A special thanks to Cliona and Miriam Hillery for their assistance and good humour on the day.

The Junior Golf team - Aaron Hillery-Nolan, Marcus O’Grady, and Charlie Kennedy represented the College in the recent Leinster Schools qualifying competition in Balcarrick GC, Co. Dublin. The boys performed admirably on a tricky little course which was quite sodden in places due to the recent rainfall. However, they represented the College well. Unfortunately, the team score (best two of three, stableford scores) wasn’t enough to qualify to the Leinster finals. I would like to thank the three players, plus Mark Nolan, who not only assisted with giving lifts to and from Balcarrick GC, but who also stayed and accompanied the players during their rounds.

02.05.2018: Junior Golf

Congratulations to the Junior golf team: Ross Whitaker (4D), James Quinn (3D) & Luke MacMahon (3C) on their recent performance in the All-Ireland stroke play finals in Monkstown GC, Cork. The boys competed in the finals as Leinster champions, playing against the three other provincial winners.

The team, assisted on the day(s) by Jim Quinn, Rory MacMahon & Brian Whitaker, finished a very close 3rd in the final behind the Munster champions and Connacht champions, and ahead of the Ulster champions.

The standard of golf was at an exceptional level, with windy conditions at times affecting the flight of the ball for all players.

To understand how close the final was, any of the four teams could have won the competition on the final players card, on the final hole. Even at that stage, nobody was entirely sure who had won, until the scores were signed off and confirmed by the tournament officials.

Ross, James & Luke deserve a huge amount of credit for the hours of work that they have put in, representing the College this year; from practice rounds at various courses, to qualifying for the Leinster finals, winning the Leinster final and performing as best they could, on the day, in the All-Ireland finals.

Also, thank you to Jim & Ros Quinn, Rory MacMahon, Brian Whitaker & Erika Keane, and Ross McKeever (class of 2015) for all their help, support, transportation of boys & clubs, advice and general good humour this year!

We should look forward to continuing success from our golf teams over the next few years.

All Ireland Finals Results (stableford scoring):

Munster (Ard Scoil na Mara, Tramore)    66 points

Connacht (St. Jarlath’s, Tuam)                  66 points

Leinster (Gonzaga College SJ)                  64 points

Ulster (Bangor Grammar)                         64 points
