Gonzaga has a proud tradition in schools’ tennis.
We have won the Leinster schools’ Cups on many occasions at each age level.
The school has five tennis courts. Our tennis facilities are amongst the best in Irish schools’ tennis.
Throughout the 1960s and 70s, Fr. Keane SJ built up tennis in the college from scratch to establish the school as one of the most respected tennis schools in the country. When he retired from coaching tennis after the 1983 season, David Keenahan took over as coach and he coordinated tennis in the College from 1984 to 2016. For many years now eight teams of seven players each have represented the college annually in Leinster competitions. Many other boys just play tennis for enjoyment. An annual highlight is the Past v Present tennis match in May. Enquiries about tennis at Gonzaga may be directed to Mr Howlett.

Charlie Riley (2D) was part of the team of two boys and two girls representing Ireland at the U14 European Championships in the Czech Republic in July. He was one of only three players born in 2009 to reach the last 32. Earlier in July, he was also part of a team representing Ireland in the U14 European Summer Cup held in Valencia. Huge thanks to Tennis Ireland for organising these trips.

Congratulations to the Minor 1st Tennis team who won the Leinster Cup Division 1 final yesterday vs Blackrock College.
And hard luck to the Junior team, who came a very close second to Blackrock in the final of the Junior Cup.

In late August, Charlie Riley from 1D (front row, in cap) won the Junior Lawn Tennis Championship of Ireland (U12) at Fitzwilliam. He was then asked to represent Ireland in the Junior Four Nations tennis tournament which was held in Corby in the UK from 24-26 September. Ireland had two players for both the boys and girls sections in the under 12, under 14 and 18 age groups and all the players played singles and doubles matches against players from England, Scotland and Wales. “I really enjoyed playing the matches and supporting my team mates. It was very close at the end as Ireland only lost out in the last match 7-6, 7-6 to England” said Charlie. Ireland came second overall with England taking first place.
2016 was a very successful season. The Seniors won the Leinster Senior Cup for the third time in a row. The Minors also won the Cup, and the Juniors reached the Final.
