Prefect

The College Captain, Vice-Captain, and Prefects at Gonzaga, as at most Jesuit schools, are appointed by the Headmaster; they are not simply elected.  Having said that, appointment follows a consultative vote of the Fifth Year and Staff. The Headmaster appoints the students he thinks most suitable; almost always these are the people recommended in the consultative vote.

While they are expected to perform a variety of practical tasks prefects have two principal roles:  they are models to their peers and to the college as a whole of what a Gonzaga student should be at his best; and they have a particular responsibility for the care of First year students, introducing them to the culture of the college and encouraging them in their various endeavours.

Student Council

The role of the Student Council in Gonzaga is to promote the interests of the school and the involvement of students in the affairs of the school, in co-operation with the board, parents, guardians and teachers.

The Student Council aims and objectives are as follows:

  • Representing the views of the student body to the school management.

  • To enhance communication between students, management, staff and parents.

  • To promote an environment conducive to educational and personal development.

  • To promote friendship and respect among pupils.

  • To support the management and staff in the development of the school.

  • To represent the views of the students on matters of general concern to them.

  • To promote the core values as defined in the Mission Statement of Gonzaga College.

  • To be aware of and embody the Ethos of the College and its Ignatian influence so that all can advance in a spirit of co-operation and mutual support to the benefit of pupils, teachers, parents, guardians and the Community.

  • To provide opportunities for discussion, information and consultation about matters of concern to the student body.

  • The submit, as it deems fit, for consideration to the Headmaster from time to time, matters arising from such discussion, information and consultation.
